Is it working?
10.21.09

So now that the new site has been up for a couple weeks I’ve had a few people asking if it’s scoring me any work. The answer is definitely yes. Since the site has gone live I’ve been contracted to do logo designs and some advertisements for The Source. So hopefully things will continue to pick up. I do have some comments on job listings to share…

I’ve discovered a really disturbing trend in job listings on various online classifieds web sites. It seems like everyone who wants to hire a graphic designer wants them to also have graduated from MIT so they can code high-end database driven web sites. On the flip side every job listing for a web developer also wants the person to be a creative/artistic genius and Photoshop wizard.

What happened to people hiring experts in their field? Today I found a job listing for a web developer and in the required skills area it listed Quark, InDesign, Illustrator, Logo Design, and Photoshop as the must haves for the job. What do any of those have to do with web development?!

I think for the most part people just assume Graphic Designer = Web Programmer. Which can sometimes be the case but odds are they’re either really good at one and bad at the other or only so-so at both. I mean would you hire an interior designer to draft the blue prints for your house and build it? Probably not. /end rant. :-)

It’s alive!

Welcome to the new EmeryMedia.com, my personal online portfolio and blog. I’ve been putting off redesigning my web site for quite a long time now so it feels good to have it done. Infinite gratitude goes out to my buddy Andrew for handling the coding and putting up with my nit picky changes. Stop by often to check out my latest work and blog posts! Emery out!

Now for the hard part…

With the visual look of the site finished the really fun part begins, coding! I actually don’t plan to do this all by myself but instead enlist one of my web savvy friends to help out. I’m sure they’re all looking forward to me begging and pleading for PHP databases and cross-browser stability. A case of beer to the brave person who accepts the challenge!

With things a little slow in contract land I’ve decided its time to finally redesign my website, which has been in “coming soon” mode for a long time. Prior to that it was my slick post-grad flash portfolio site, sadly it's a tad dated now. Maybe after the new site is complete I’ll provide a link so you can all dare to compare the old and new, hmm or maybe not.
